En términos modern, Smith was interested in developing a theory of economic growth. In the first pages of his work "An investigation into the origins and causes of the wealth of nations " Smith announced his fundamental explanation for economic growth, "the division of labor."
In Smith scheme dividing line between jobs "productive" and "unproductive" is a fundamental analytical distinction to the study of long-term economic development and interpretation of national output.
The use of término "riqueza" es clave en su definición de "actividad productiva". Para Smith, sólo los resultados de los empleos productivos del trabajo debían contarse para calcular el producto social.
Quedaban excluidas las actividades de "servicios" porque no rendían productos tangibles o excedentes que se pudieran reinvertir. Se derivaba que todas las actividades gubernamentales eran improductivas ....junto a clérigos, abogados etc. Smith no negaba a estos grupos una renta por los servicios prestados; pero sus esfuerzos no ayudaban a hacer más rica la sociedad del mañana. En su análisis del valor mantuvo que el precio natural de un bien, que representaba its real value was set by the " invisible hand" market ... avoiding privileges and government interventions.
Given that this book was published in 1776, it is interesting to think about some of his thoughts. Mark
