Cervantes Prize 1999 and the Chilean ambassador in Paris writing his memoirs in time free office lets
Every morning, six to eight, Chile's ambassador in Paris was lifted out and placed in an office on the second floor of his official residence, overlooking Les Invalides. This is when the ambassador, Jorge Edwards (Santiago de Chile, 1931) forgets everything about his position and writes. The office is big, beautiful, with a small table ("I found out there in the house, but I'll change") and with a long history: it was the favorite room of another famous Chilean ambassador, poet Pablo Neruda, which Edwards knew well because he worked at his side, then as second in the embassy. "He walked around with a stuffed lion petting constantly, "he recalls. Edwards, 80, is packed and then recounts the personalities who have sat in that office," Mitterrand, several times, Passion, Louis Aragon ...". then allowed to invade for their service counter and adds that the firm has not only history but the entire building, built in the early twentieth century. "belonged to a wealthy family come down, and the original owner committed suicide by hanging is not known if a beam. Maybe one day write that story. "
While intended to attack the story of the hangman, each morning, Edwards advances in the drafting of the first volume of his memoirs. Purples, titled Circles." They are circles that we had left in my mouth when we were young and we went into the worst Santiago taverns to drink bad wine. With these circles came home. "To write them, do not consult anything but his memories:" If I were to investigate, would be another book, "he says.
He laments that his office does not leave much time to write." There are dozens of visits, petitions, people who come to the embassy for all: a few days ago, a lady sent us a receipt so that we were to pick a watch that had sent in a repair shop. The good news is that back ... We asked for 500 euros! The lady had not even paid for! ".
Edwards, who has just published the novel The Death of Montaigne (Tusquets), adds that many nights, when all this hard work and many tasks overwhelm you, is locked in the office as usual and looks out the window illuminated the beautiful golden dome of The invalid. That's enough, then.
